With all due respect to Mr. Woolsey and his service in the CIA, I do not think it is in the long term national security of the USA people to breezily dismiss, as common sense, the occasional need to make alliances with *very bad people* like Stalin.
The choices available to the USA before involving itself in a war against Nazi Germany were numerous and varied. In speculating on what could have been had any of those other choices been taken, it's hard to find another choice that could have been any worse than the choice taken and some would have been much better.
